Lieutenant Ballantyne born, lived and died at sea
Alexander John Ballantyne,
Annual International Exhibition of All fine Arts, Industry and Inventions 70mm Medal. (LIEUT. A.J. BALLANTYNE. R.N. CATALOGUE No. 2063 ETC.).
Born 1845 at sea on board the wooden clipper Gloriana, off the African coast.
1859 joined Royal Navy training ship Brittannia at Dartmouth.
1860 as a naval Cadet to HMS Nile, still on board in the visit to New York 1863.
1873 trains as a Gunnery Lieutenant. Serving on many ships he was eventually placed on the Colonsay being ill. He died on board on his journey home.
Alexander had no less than four paintings exhibited at the Exhibition.
