John Oliver Augustas Arkell,
(1899-1977).

55mm bronze Stampex Medal (LT. CDR. J.O.A. ARKELL. R.N. 1970.)

Born Highworth, Swindon 1899 into the Arkell Brewery family.

Enlisted as a Royal Naval Cadet 1917 served on H.M.S. New Zealand during WW1 as a Midshipman, resigns his commission as a sub-lieutenant 1922 and joins the reserve. Recalled to duty 1939 and served throughout WW2.
He was also in the Red Cross.
He was renowned for his knowledge on postal history and had a book published on the subject.
1997 dies at home, Shrivenham.
