Condon was born in Wexford, in September 1888. he enlisted into the Royal Engineers at Tralee in April 1911. He served with the 15th Fortress Company RE stationed at Gibralter between March 1912 and September 1914.
15th Fortress Coy was then redesignated as the 15th Field Company and allocated to the 8th Division. He arrived in France on the 5th November 1914. The unit was located at Nouveau Monde, near Bailleul, France.
Robert Condon was serving with No. 4 Section when he was wounded in back from shellfire on the 13th December 1914 when the section were constructing a stockade at Pont Logy. As a result of this he was evacuated back to England on the hospital ship 'Oxfordshire' on the 23rd December 1914.
He spent the remainder of the war stationed at Chatham. He was awarded a 1914 Star trio with clasp and roses for his service in WW1. His Medal Index Card can be viewed by clicking on here if you have access to Ancestry, (although a paper copy will be provided with this listing).
He continued to serve with the Royal Engineers following the war and served in India - February 1925 to March 1926; Malta - March 1926 to February 1929, Home - February 1929 to April 1929 when he was finally discharged as medically unfit.
