Price: £195.00

WW1 1914 Mons Star medal group awarded to 69579 (later 336849) Driver (later Aircraftman) John William Ettle, Royal Field Artillery, later 10 Squadron RAF. Ettle, a regular solider before the war served as a driver with the Royal Field Artillery, and entered France on the 18th August 1914. At some point he joined the RAF and served with No 3 Squadron.

3 Squadron was formed in 1912 and was sent to France on the outbreak of WW1. The squadron initially operated in the reconnaissance role using a variety of aircraft types. It is not clear when Ettle transferred to this squadron to serve as an ‘aircraftman’, but interestingly the English ace James McCudden served as an aircraftman and later observer with 3 Squadron from June 1913 to January 1916 before leaving to become a pilot. The squadron’s history can be viewed by clicking on here.

The details of his awards are as follows:

1914 Star (with Mons clasp) named to 69579. DVR. J. W. ETTLE., R.F.A.

British War Medal and Victory Medal named to 69579. DVR. J. W. ETTLE., R.A.

The medals are court mounted and Included with this listing is a printed copy of his Medal Index Cards (which also confirms the clasp and roses) which can also be viewed by clicking on here (if you have access to Ancestry). I have been unable to identify any service records relating to this man.
