K.18529 R. SMITH. STO. 1. R.N.

Robert enlisted aged 20 in 1913 and served as a Stoker, On 1st January 1915 he was serving on board H.M.S. Formidable, the first ship to be sunk by Submarine during the war. Hit by 2 torpedoes about 37 miles of the Devonshire coast.
He is commemorated on the Chatham Memorial.
