QSA/WW1 Medal Group, Military Medical Staff Corps Group - Named To Rodgers
A Boer War/WW1 medal group awarded to William Rodgers, who served in the Boer War with the Military Medical Staff Corps (later the Royal Army Medical Corps) and in WW1 with the Royal Engineers.
The details of his awards are as follows:
Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps CAPE COLONY, TRANSVAAL, SOUTH AFRICA 1901, SOUTH AFRICA 1902, named to 18 PTE W. RODGERS MIL MED S. C.
1914-15 Star named to 64157, DVR. W. RODGERS. R. E.
British War Medal & Victory Medal named to 64167 DVR. W. RODGERS. R.E.
The medals are court mounted with replacement ribbons.
William Rodgers was born at Carrickfergus, Co Antrim in 1882. His uncle (Paul Rodgers) developed the shipyard at Carrickfergus in 1870. According to his service records which can be viewed by clicking on here if you have a subscription to ‘find my past’, he was attested into the Military Medical Staff Corps (MMSC) at Belfast on 18 April 1901. Within 6 months of joining up he was tried for being drunk on duty and sentenced to 28 days hard labour.
He later served in South Africa, returning to Belfast in September 1902 and continued to serve with territorial force RAMC.
He attested for the Royal Engineers in February 1915 and served in France with 122 Field Company Royal Engineers (36th Ulster Division). He was discharged from the service in July 1919 at Chatham.
