Price: £295.00

A WW1 Mons Star medal group awarded to 7804, Acting Corporal (later Sergeant), William Renwick who served with the 1st Battalion the Duke Of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Renwick was a regular who served prior to the start of WW1 and given his service number would have enlisted at some point between 1903 and 1904.

The battalion was in Ireland at the onset of war and as a part of the 14th Brigade in the 5th Division landed at Le Havre on the 15th August 1914. Renwick’s Medal Index Card which can be viewed by clicking on here, (if you have access to Ancestry although a paper copy will be provided with this listing) shows he arrived on the 21st August.

The Brigade, as a Regular Army formation (one of the Old Contemptibles). fought in many of the major battles of the Western Front from the Battle of Mons in 1914 to the later stages of the Somme offensive, including the first battle using tanks. In November 1917 it moved with the Division to Italy but returned to France in April 1918. Renwick would have served with them throughout this time.

Whilst I’ve been unable to find any service records related to this man, an extract from the 14th Field Ambulance diary which can be viewed by clicking on here, (if you have access to ‘find my past’) states that Renwick (now a Sergeant) was admitted to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the left hand on the 28th July 1916 - at a point in time when the battalion was involved in the Battle of the Somme.

The details of his awards are as follows:

1914 Star (with Mons clasp) named to 7804, PTE W. RENWICK 1/D. OF CORN: L.I.

British War Medal and Victory Medal named to 7804 A. CPL. W. RENWICK. D.C.L.I.

The medals have been court mounted with replacement ribbons.

Price £295 - please read the terms and conditions below.
