Price: £250.00

A WW1 medal group awarded to J4930, Able Seaman (Later Leading Seaman), William Oswald Gavin, Royal Navy.  Gavan was born on the 5th May 1892, and joined the Royal Navy on the 5th May 1910 his 18th birthday.

According to his service records, which can be viewed by clicking on here (if you have access to Ancestry although a paper copy will be provided with this listing), he had a number of assignments before the outbreak of WW1.

During the war, he served most of the time on HMS Fox, operating in the Middle East, the history of which can be viewed by clicking on here.

The details of his awards are as follows:

Naval General Service Medal, (clasp PERSIAN HULF 1909-1914) named to J.4930. W. O. GAVAN, A.B. H.M.S.FOX

1914-15 Star named to J.4930, W. O. GAVAN, L.S., R.N.

British War Medal and Victory Medal named to J.4930. W. O. GAVANT, L.S. R.N. Please see NOTE1 below.

NOTE1: the spelling of the surname on both the British War Medal and the Victory Medal is different to the spelling on the NGSM and the 1914-15 Star. The Naval Medal Roll entry for Gavan, (a paper copy of which is included with this listing) which can also be viewed by clicking on here (again if you have access to Ancestry), clearly states ‘GAVAN’, so given that all the medals have the same service number, this is clearly an error by the engraver.

The medals are supplied loose with the remnants of their original ribbons, his Persian Gulf clasp is confirmed on the medal roll (a copy of which will be supplied with this listing) which can also be viewed by clicking on here (again if you have access to Ancestry).

PRICE £250 - please read the terms and conditions below.
