WW1 Medal Groups
WW1 Trio With Defence Medal, Liverpool Regiment - Named To Casson
A WW1 Trio (and accompanying WW2 Defence Medal) group awarded to 1630 (later 380719) Private (later Lance Corporal) Ernest Casson, who served with the 5th Battalion Liverpool Regiment.
The regiment was formed in August 1914 in Liverpool and moved to the south coast where it remained until February 1915 when it sailed for France which matches the date on Casson’s Medal Index Card which can be viewed by clicking on here, (if you have access to Ancestry although a paper copy of which will be provided with this listing), which shows that he arrived in France on the 21st February 1915.
The details of his awards are as follows:
1914-15 Stare named to 1630. PTE. E CASSON. L’POOL . R.
British War Medal and Victory Medal named to 380719 PTE. E. CASSON. L’POOL . R.
Defence Medal unnamed as issued.
The medals are provided loose with a set of replacement ribbons.
The 5th Battalion formed a part of the 99th Brigade in same Division, before transferring to 165th Brigade, 55th (West Lancashire) Division in January 1916. While in France the Battalion took part in the Battles of Festubert and Loos in 1915, the Battles of Guillemont, Ginchy, Flers Of Gullemont and Morval in 1916 to name just a few.
I have been unable to locate Casson’s service records, but from his medal roll details it appears that he was discharged in March 1919 and was entitled to a Silver War Badge, the reference can be seen by clicking on here, (again if you have access to Ancestry).
