WW1 Medal Groups
WW1 Trio With Memorial Plaque, Royal Warwickshire Regiment - Named To Pickering
A WW1 casualty medal group awarded to 241303, Private Ernest William Pickering, who served with the 6th (Territorial) Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment. The unit took part in many of the Western Front engagements prior to its redeployment to the Italian front in 1917. The history of its actions and activities can be viewed by clicking on here.
Unfortunately, Pickering’s Medal Index Card, which can be viewed by clicking on here, (if you have access to Ancestry, although a paper copy will be provided with this listing), does not state when he joined the battalion in France, but his Commonwealth War Graves Commission entry, which can be viewed by clicking on here, shows that he was killed in action on the 28th August 1917 shortly before the battalions departure to Italy.
He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial Cemetery near the town of Ieper in Belgium. The memorial bears the names of some 35,000 men of the British and New Zealand forces who have no known grave, nearly all of whom died between August 1917 and November 1918.
This area on the Western Front was the scene of the Third Battle of Ypres, also known as the Battle of Passchendaele, and the date of Pickering’s death does fall into the timescale of the battle. I have been unable to locate any service records to this man and I have not undertaken any further research into his life.
The details of his awards are as follows:
British War Medal and Victory Medal named to 241303. PTE. E. W. PICKERING. R. WAR. R.
Memorial Plaque named to ERNEST WILLIAM PICKERING.
The medals are loose and come with their original ribbons. The Memorial Plaque includes its original cardboard outer and condolence slip.
