A WW1/WW2 medal group awarded to the Handley Family.

The WW1 medals were awarded to 6245 (later 251112) Private John Handley who served initially with the 5th Reserve Battalion, Durham Light infantry (DLI) before being promoted to Lance Corporal and serving with the 20th Battalion DLI.

The details of his awards are as follows:

British War Medal & Victory Medal named to 6245 PTE. J. HANDLEY.  DURH. L. I.

The WW2 medal groups were awarded to R. W Handley and Miss P. M. Handley who both served in the RAF and resided at 51 Marlborough Road, East Kirkby, Nottingham.

I have not undertaken any further research into this couple.

The details of their awards are as follows:-

Miss P. M. Handley:

Defence Medal unnamed as issued.

British War Medal unnamed as issued.

These medals are loose and come with their original wax packets, ribbons and original Air Ministry Box of issues with enclosed Air Ministry Medal Award slip and the RAF ‘ticker tape’.

R. W. Handley:

1939-45 Star unnamed as issued.

Burma Star unnamed as issued.

Defence Medal unnamed as issued.

British War Medal unnamed as issued.

These medals are also loose and come with their original ribbons and original Air Ministry Box of issues with enclosed Air Ministry Medal Award slip - sadly the RAF ‘ticker tape’ in this case is missing.

Accompanying all three medal groups are a mass of family photographs showing people in uniform as well as civilian dress from both WW1 and WW2 era and a number showing far-east locations.

FURTHER DETAILS:

In regards to John Handley, his Medal Index Card and medal roll details can be viewed by clicking on here and on here, (if you have access to Ancestry) however, his service records can be viewed by clicking on here, (if you have a subscription to ‘find my past’).

In Summary, Handley was born in 1886, prior to joining up he lived at 56 Vane Street Statin Terrace, Co Durham and worked as a butcher. He attested in December 1915 and was mobilised and posted to 5th Reserve Battalion Durham Light Infantry in July 1916.

He arrived in France on the on the 23/12/16 and with the exception of about 5 weeks when he was posted to the ‘Depot’ (in May 1917), he remained with the 5th until July 1917, when he was posted to the 6th Battalion for a month before being promoted to Lance Corporal and transferred to 20th Battalion where he remained for the duration of the war.

He appears to have suffered a gunshot wound on the 28/10/1918 and was finally discharged from the service in July 1919. He appears to have returned home in October 1919. The activity and actions of the DLI during WW1 can be viewed by clicking on here.

In regards to the WW2 medal groups, the Handley’s did not occupy the address at Marlborough Road in 1939, and a different family occupies this property at the time of the census. I have not been able to establish the relationship between these two people and their relationship to John Handley.
