A Territorial Force War Medal awarded to Private John Austin Sansom, who served with the 1/4 Dorset Regiment.

Neither Sansom’s Medal Index Card or medal roll entries, which can be viewed by clicking on here,  on here and on here, (if you have access to Ancestry), although a paper copy of the MIC will be provided with this listing, give any indication as to which theatre of war that he served in, however, his Commonwealth War Graves Entry, (which can be viewed by clicking on here), indicates that Sansom died on the 8th July 1916, while serving in modern day Iraq during the Mesopotamian campaign and is buried in the cemetery at Basra.

The details of his award are as follows:

Territorial Force War Medal named to 1557 PTE. J. A. SANSOM. DORSET. R.

FURTHER DETAILS:

Whilst I have not been able to trace any service records relating to this man, in regards to his regiment, in August 1914, the 1/4 Dorset Regiment were a part of the South Western Brigade serving with the Wessex Division.

In October 1914, they sailed for India, landing at Bombay on the 10th November 1914. In February 1916 they landed at Basra, serving with 42nd Indian Brigade and remained in Mesopotamia for the rest of the war.

Sansom died some five months after landing at Basra. Details regarding the Division he served in and the campaign he took part in can be viewed by clicking on here and on here.
