WW2 Medal Groups
WW2 Medal Group & Log Books, Bomber Command, King’s Flight - Named To Richmond
A WW2 medal group awarded to 55522, Flight Lieutenant, Alfred Edward Richmond, who served with the RAF from 1939 to 1961, before leaving the service to become a commercial pilot.
Richmond was born in the Isle of Man and enlisted into the RAF in August 1939. He trained at various locations in England, but mainly in Rhodesia. Once qualified, he served in a number of locations across Europe and the Mediterranean as well as the middle-east with various Squadrons.
He resigned his commission in March 1961 and commenced service as a commercial pilot. There is an Ancestry entry that documents the fact that he passed away in September 1982 while living in Sussex.
The group includes his full set of log books, which covers his entire service as summerised above. They start with his air training in Rhodesia (noting his first ‘solo’), followed by his service with a number of Squadrons, including 644 Squadron (with which he logs a number of ‘tactical bombing raid’ entries in 1944).
The logs then go on to describe his time with the King’s Flight, (as an original member when it was reintroduced after the end of WW2), as well as his time in Air Transport with 204 Squadron, (mainly in the middle east) and as an instructor with the ‘Oxford University Air Squadron’. Finally - after time training with jets - they describe his time on Vulcan bombers undertaking I.L.S Flights based at Waddington.
In regards to the aircraft he flew, having trained on the usual small aircraft, his log books document his time in Halifax and Stirling Bombers, Oxfords, Dakotas as well as Canberra’s (to name but a few) and finally as an instructor with the Vulcan Bomber while serving with the 230 O.C.U. Squadron.
Accompanying the log books is a fantastic collection of RAF related personal and service photographs, a number of them inserted into his log books to reflect certain entries in the logs themselves. There is a full album which covers his time in Rhodesia, with many fine notes and details describing the events and locations shown in the photographs.
Along with an official copy of his Attestation Papers, in addition, there are a number of service related letters and documents describing his time in the RAF, one confirming that his only campaign medal for WW2 is the Defence Medal, which along with the British War Medal and a set of matching miniature medals are included with this listing.
A summary of Richmond’s London Gazette entries documenting his promotions can be viewed by clicking on here.
