Welcome to our unique online medal encyclopaedia...
The encyclopaedia is broken down into the following sections:
Pre-World War I Medals - which deals with medals mainly issued to British & Commonwealth servicemen and women in the Victorian ‘era’ - 'the age of Empire' up until the start of World War I.
World War I Medals - which deals with campaign medals that were issued to British & Commonwealth servicemen and women between the years of 1914 and 1920, and all Allied 'Victory Medals' that were issued at the end of the war to all the different allied countries that participated in the conflict. This section also includes a number of medals that were initially issued prior to 1939.
World War II Medals - which deals with campaign medals that were issued to British & Commonwealth servicemen and women between the years of 1939 and 1945 – and a number of subsequently issued World War II commemorative medals.
Post-World War II Medals - which deals with campaign medals that were issued to British & Commonwealth servicemen and women from the year 1946, until the present day.
Orders, Decorations & Other Medals - which deals with Gallantry, Long Service & Good Conduct, Territorial, Coronation and Jubilee medals etc. that were issued to British & Commonwealth servicemen and women since the start of the reign of Queen Victoria.
The Whole Database - all of the British & Commonwealth medals in one place.
If you know the 'era' that your medal(s) comes from, i.e. they are World War II medals for example, simply 'click' on the relevant section below and locate your medal(s) by name, or, by viewing the images. Once you have located your medal 'click' on the individual entry and the details we hold on that particular medal will be displayed along with the associated images.
If you are not sure which 'era' your medal(s) comes from, then 'click' on 'The Whole Database' and simply scroll through the web pages (they appear in date order of issue) until you find your medal(s).
In regards to the valuations, the figures quoted on this website are reflective of the 'market rate' as of January 2015 - please see the things you should know about valuing medals...as shown on the 'Things You Should Know' page found on the 'Home Page'.
PLEASE NOTE - some medals 'lifespan' crosses over more than one section, when that is the case, it will be found in the section that the medal was first issued. There are some exceptions to this for more popular medals.
Can you help? Putting this 'Medal Encyclopaedia' together has been a huge undertaking which has taken several months to complete. In some places, it is still 'work in progress'. If you notice an error or an omission, we would be pleased to be informed of this, either by using the 'contact us' service on the website, or, simply by e-mailing us directly at philip.haigh@onlinemedals.co.uk - thank you.
