WW2 Defence Medal awarded to a member of the 104 Gloucestershire Home Guard Rocket Anti-Aircraft Battery, 17th Home Guard Anti-Aircraft Regiment.

This regiment was formed to protect Bristol on the 1st April 1944. The 17th was formed to take responsibility for the Heavy Anti-Aircraft and Rocket Batteries around the city, the existing 71st (Gloucestershire) HAA Battery and 101 to 104 Rocket AA Batteries being incorporated into the 17th at that time.

At the same time Independent Home Guard Light Anti-Aircraft Troops were formed to combat attacks by low flying enemy aircraft during daylight. These were manned by units from the factories premises to be protected.

The Defence Medal is unnamed as issued and this listing comes with a letter from the commanding officer of the regiment regarding the ongoing status of the unit (dated 9th September 1944), and two AA shoulder flashes along with a Home Guard Button Badge.

The medal is not mounted and comes with a good length of original ribbon as well as the Defence Secretary’s Medal Award Slip.
