King Edward VII Coronation Medal 1902

 

The Edward VII Coronation Medal was a commemorative medal commissioned to celebrate the coronation of King Edward which took place 9 August 1902.

 

Silver medals were awarded to members of the Royal Family, foreign dignitaries, high officials of government, senior officials and service officers involved with the coronation celebrations.

 

Bronze medals went to certain NCOs and other ranks of the Army and Royal Navy and support organisations for participation in parades. Some 3493 silver and 6054 bronze medals were issued in total.

 

 

The medal is circular, 30mm in diameter 42mm in height (max) and was struck in either silver or bronze. The obverse of this medal bears the crowned busts of both King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in their robes of state.

 

The reverse has the crowned royal cypher with the date of the coronation below.

 

The medal is unusual in that the rim is decorated with a wreath.

 

The ribbon suspender is a plain ring attached to the medal by the crown that surmounts the medal.

 

The medal was issued un-named.

 

In regards to the police issue, the medal was also circular, 36mm in diameter and struck in bronze. The obverse of this medal bears the head of King Edward VII and the inscription; ‘EDVARDVS VII REX IMPERATOR’.

 

The ribbon suspender is of the plain, straight and non-swivelling style riveted to the medal.
