A WW1 pair to Sargeant John William Carpenter who served with the 2/7 Royal Warwickshire Regiment (later apart of the 82nd Brigade, 61st (2nd South Midland) Division) and was awarded a Military Medal in August 1918, details of which can be found by clicking on here if you have access to ‘Find My Past’. The medals are:

British War Medal, Victory Medal named to 266016 SJT. J.W. CARPENTER. R. WAR. R.

Defence Medal, unnamed as issued.

The WW1 medals are loose and in their original boxes of issue with remnants of original ribbons. The Defence Medal comes in original box of issue, with Medal Award Slip, and the box is named to Carpenter at 6 Stainsby Drive, Mansfield.

FURHER DETAILS

Born in 1893, Carpenter worked as a Solicitors Clerk and was recruited at Coventry in November 1914, age 21 and arrived in France in May 1916 He was promoted Corporal in May 1916, then Sargeant in August 1918 and was discharged in April 1919.

By 1939, according to the 1939 Register, he was a civil servant working for the ministry of Labour living at 6 Stainsby Drive, Mansfield. By this time, he was also a member of the ARP.

In relation to service during WW1, his division landed in France in May 1916. On 19 July 1916, together with the 5th Australian Division, they fought in the Battle of Fromelles, designed as a feint attack as part of the Somme Offensive. The attack, against well prepared German positions based on a ridge, was a disaster. The division later took part in the advance to the Hindenburg Line and the Third Battle of Ypres.
