WW1 Medal Groups
WW1 Trio, Royal Field Artillery - Named To Ellis
A WW1 medal group awarded to 20877, Gunner Charlie, Ellis, who served with the Royal Field Artillery.
According to Ellis’ Medal Index Card which can be viewed by clicking on here, (if you have access to Ancestry, although a paper copy will be provided with this listing), he arrived in France on 13/7/15.
The details of his awards are as follows:
1914-15 Star named to 20877, GNR: C. ELLIS. R.F.A.
British War Medal and Victory Medal named to 20877 GNR. C. ELLIS. R.A.
The medals are supplied loose with replacement ribbons but do come with a matching set of contemporary miniature medals.
FURTHER DETAILS:
Ellis’ medal roll details can be viewed by clicking on here and on here, (again if you have access to Ancestry). Sadly, neither of these provide any indication as to which unit he served in however, his very well preserved service records (20 plus pages) can be viewed on Ancestry by clicking on here.
In summary, they indicate that Ellis who lived in Leeds where he worked as a Labourer, enlisted in September 1914 at the age of 20.
He served in France from July 1915 until May 1916 when he was posted to India serving with the 13th Division, but suffered badly with Malaria and had to be moved to a theatre ‘where Malaria is not prevalent’, so in August 1916 he was transferred to the Mesopotamia theatre (56th Brigade) and finally serving in Salonika not returning to England until June 1919. His service records detail the units he served with.
At this point he was discharged being no longer fit for service, consequently he was awarded a Silver War Badge, details of which can be viewed by clicking on here, (again if you have access to Ancestry) - all in all a fascinating read.
I have undertaken no further research on this man, but given the detail in his records he would be easily traced on Ancestry.
