WW1/2 Family Group, RNAS/RAF, Flying Boats - Named To Stedman
A family group issued to the Stedman family.
John Frank Steadman served as an Aircraft Mechanic with the Royal Naval Air Service later the RAF, he was posted to Italy and served with 271 Squadron.
His awards are as follows:
British War Medal & Victory Medal named to 226788. 1.A.M. J. F. STEDMAN. R.A.F.
Defence Medal unnamed as issued.
His daughter Peggy Masters Stedman, served in WW2 in the ambulance service. Her awards are as follows:
Defence Medal.
British War Medal both unnamed as issued.
John Stedman’s medals are loose and come with their original ribbons. Peggy Stedman’s medals are also loose, with original ribbons and the medals come in the original box of issue along with their wax packets.
FURTHER INFORMATION:
John Stedman was born in Kent in 1895. He can be easy located on Find My Past, a summary can be found by clicking on here.
He joined the RNAS in March 1917. In civvie street he was a motor mechanic, and was posted to 271 Squadron in January 1918.
271 Squadron was formed from Flights 357, 358, and 367 based at the former Royal Naval Air Service station of Otranto in southern Italy. All had been equipped with flying boats or seaplanes, mostly the Felixstowe F.3 and possibly some Short 184s.
The mission was to protect shipping from German U-boats; after the Armistice, the unit was quickly disbanded. He left the RAF in 1919. His service records can be found by clicking on here if you have access to Find My Past.
He passed away in 1954.
He and his family, including his daughter Peggy Masters Stedman, can be found on the 1939 register by clicking on here, again if you have access to Find My Past. His daughter was born in 1920 and worked as a nursery governess. The address on the 1939 Register matches the address on the medal box of issue.
The 1939 Register also indicates that John Stedman was in the ARP during WW2, which accounts for the defence medal.
