A 1914 Mons Star with clasp awarded to 5217, Bombardier Alfred (Herbert) Smith who served with the 35th Brigade Royal Field Artillery.

Smith arrived in France on 6/10/14, the Medal Index Card and the medal roll confirming the clasp can be viewed clicking on here and on here, (if you have access to Ancestry), although a paper copy of the MIC will be provided with this listing.

The details of his award are as follows:

1914 Star (with Mons clasp) named to 5217, BMBR: A. SMITH. R.F.A.

The medal ribbon is a little tired, but shows how the clasp was attached - I can provide a replacement ribbon free of charge if required.

Smith’s service records can be viewed by clicking on here, if you have access to ‘find my past’. In summary, he joined the Royal Field Artillery at aged 23 in January 1900 obtaining the rank of Bombardier in March 1904. He later transferred to the Labour Corp, (service number 368916) in September 1917. He left the forces in June 1919 after nearly 20 years of service.

The 35th Brigade Royal Field Artillery was stationed in the Eastern Command within the United Kingdom on mobilisation in August 1914, and was attached to the 7th Division and sent to the Continent in September 1914. It saw service with the division on the Western Front throughout the war.
